ANNUAL
REPORT

MESSAGE FROM OUR LEADERSHIP

Giving back to communities across our great country has been one of Canadian Tire’s cornerstones for all of its 100 years, thanks to the values established by the Company’s founders, A.J. and J.W. Billes. Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities, inspired by our Chairman Emeritus Martha Billes, has, for 17 years, continued to embody this value by helping kids reach their full potential through the joy of sport and play.

Despite the ongoing challenges of the pandemic for kids, parents, and sport organizations, Jumpstart was there to provide support during their time of need. Our ability to step up and help sport organizations and kids across Canada was on full display, and we are so proud of all we accomplished. Building off our $8M commitment to Sport Relief in 2020, Jumpstart recognized the ongoing need for a sustained commitment to saving community sport and delivered more than $12M in 2021 to the Sport Relief Program, supporting more than 1,600 organizations and over 240,000 kids across Canada.DELIMITER

Organizations from coast-to-coast-to-coast were able to count on Jumpstart to help them through the pandemic, either by keeping their doors open or adapting their programs to the changing restrictions brought on by COVID-19. This resulted in countless organizations being able to provide access to sport and play for kids of all abilities at a critical time.

We delivered our first State of Sport report, which guided Jumpstart’s response to the pandemic and enabled us to help sport stakeholders better understand the needs of kids and community sport organizations across the country.

Jumpstart’s commitment to Inclusive Play continued to shine through the creation of new playgrounds in Vernon, BC, Whitehorse, YT, and Yellowknife, NT. We also opened our first Jumpstart Multi Sport Courts in Uxbridge, ON and Thompson, MB.

We are so proud of and grateful for the support provided by frontline and corporate employees, Jumpstart’s Board of Directors, Canadian Tire Dealers, vendors, partners, and customers.

Looking forward, our commitment will shift from helping to save sport in communities across Canada to rebuilding sport back, better than before. Every child deserves a chance – a chance to experience life’s simple pleasure of sport and play!

2021 STATE OF SPORT REPORT

At Jumpstart, we are focused on improving the well-being of children by enabling access to sport and play for kids across Canada.

Our 2021 State of Sport report highlights the findings of a research study we undertook in partnership with Ipsos to understand the impact of COVID-19 on access to sport in Canada.

The findings make it clear that Canada’s recreational sport ecosystem is in dire need of support.

KEY FINDINGS
The infrastructure of recreational sport in Canada is crumbling
  • 3 in 10 sport organizations are temporarily or indefinitely closed
  • 6 in 10 are attempting to run modified programming
  • One third of sport organizations are bankrupt or approaching bankruptcy
The impact on Canadian youth is severe
  • 74% of parents say their kids are feeling isolated and lonely
  • 64% say kids are finding it hard to reduce stress and anxiety
  • 69% of parents say their kids are already showing signs of being less physically fit
A ‘return to normalcy’ in sport won’t be quick or easy
  • 52% of community sport organizations not permanently closed are concerned about the permanent closure of their organization in 2021 as a result of the pandemic
  • More than three-quarters of all organizations believe it will take more than six months for the recreational sport sector to return to a “pre-COVID state”

2021 SPORT RELIEF FUND

Sport has the power to unite communities and the nation – in its absence, the importance of sport and play became more apparent than ever. Thanks to a generous gift of $12M from Canadian Tire Corporation to our Sport Relief Fund, 240,000 kids got back into sport and play in 2021 – back to building friendships and making memories that will last a lifetime.

RECIPIENT HIGHLIGHTS

HEROS

Hockey Education Reaching Out Society (HEROS) is a volunteer-driven charity that provides free hockey programming for at-risk youth, offering a safe and stable environment for them to grow, connect and succeed.

DELIMITER

With help from the Jumpstart Sport Relief Fund, HEROS has continued to focus on what they do best: providing every participant with a “team for life”.

LADY BALLERS CAMP

Lady Ballers Camp is a not-for-profit offering quality, cost-free sports programming for young women from underserved neighbourhoods in the Greater Toronto Area.

DELIMITER

Their mission is to increase interest and confidence in sports and physical activities for racialized girls – the most underrepresented demographic in Canadian sports and recreation.

Lady Ballers suffered significant setbacks due to the pandemic, but with assistance from Jumpstart’s Sport Relief Fund, they were able to keep many of their programs safely running and retained the support of a sports psychologist.

LIVING SKIES

Living Skies, a program provided through Aboriginal Friendship Centres, is Saskatchewan’s first-ever provincial-wide Indigenous youth basketball league.

DELIMITER

The program offers on-court sessions, workshops and cultural education. With Indigenous youth as the focus, the league is a vessel for reconciliation and meaningful change in their communities.

With the support of Jumpstart’s Sport Relief Fund, Living Skies has been able to offer programming for more than 300 youth and counting in more than 15 communities across the province of Saskatchewan, free of charge.

INCLUSIVE PLAY

CREATING A MORE INCLUSIVE CANADA

At Jumpstart, we are working with municipalities and local Canadian Tire Dealers to bring inclusive play to communities across the country. Too many kids are left on the sidelines due to barriers such as a lack of adapted sport programs or inaccessible play spaces.

In 2021, we added five new inclusive play assets including three inclusive playgrounds and two multi sport courts.

“When you have a kid with a disability, it is difficult to find those activities that you can do as a family. As my other two are getting older, they are doing different activities that he can’t be a part of, so we are always trying to find things that we can all do together. So having an inclusive playground is great because everyone is excited to come here. We can come here and do that as a family versus many other places in the city where we can’t.”
